Spain is a country that has been around for centuries. As it evolved into what it is today, many people appreciate the beauty and diversity of the culture that is found in Spain. Included in its culture is the Spaniards love for sports. Spain sports have been highlighted when the country hosted the summer Olympic Games in 1992.
There are several popular Spain sports, including football and cycling. Bull fighting has been one of the traditional Spain sports that are still being practiced up to this very day. Spain sports are now more like a past time that many Spaniards and tourist converge and celebrate.
Football in Spain
Football is the most popular of Spain sports and also the most played and followed by the country. Several of the major cities in Spain have a football team, namely Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Valencia FC. These teams have very staunch supporters and fans in the country and in some other parts of the world.
Cycling in Spain
Since the 1940's, cycling has been a favorite of the many Spain sports. The Vuelta a Espana is a race in Spain that is comparable to Giro d'Italia and Tour De France. Many Spanish cyclists have featured in the Tour de France and won it. Miguel Indurain, a Spaniard, is one of the few who won the coveted yellow jersey in the Tour de France five consecutive times. When the Tour de France goes through the Pyrenees in Spain, many supporters line up the sloping roads and cheer their compatriots.
Bullfighting in Spain
Bullfighting is a unique sport that can be found almost exclusively in Spain since the 17th century. Among the many Spain sports that abound in Spain, this is the most culturally based and also a controversial one. Many animal rights activists frown down on this sport but many of the Spaniards continue to watch and cheer this sport. It consists of a group or a single matador that flirts with danger as it tries to irritate the bulls into charging into their red capes.
Many tourists visit the country in time to witness these Spain sports, which are usually seasonal. Make sure you make a reservation a few months prior to your trip for
hotels and tickets to the events because many tourists flock to watch these Spain sports in action and tickets may be hard to come by when you try to book too close to the event.
