- fun but no serious way to learn a language These things are great to listen to, to hear the pronunciation of various native speakers (they might use 3 different speakers over the course of the 3 volumes) but there is no way that you're going to learn a language this way unless you are a mimic. They are good for practice and pronunciation, though.
They don't make you come up with the translations on your own. It's too easy to sit back and wait a few seconds and just listen to the correct translation.
And it's far too distracting to try to drive and listen to this at the same time. It's cool to rip to mp3 and listen to on a hammock though. I've had mine for 3 years and I've picked-up maybe 20 words of Spanish this way. I've spent enough time studying languages to know that the only way to really learn them is to force yourself to translate back and forth between English and the foreign language and build-up your vocabulary. But still that will not give you the proper or even a realistic pronunciation, and that is where these CDs really help.
- Great Course I'm over 50 and had never studied Spanish. I initially spent about 9 months going through the course, and found that I was able to have limited conversations about many things. It's a great overview of the grammar basics. I am a physician and supplemented it with a week of a medical spanish course, which was very helpful, put on by the University of Arizona in La Paz Mexico, for which I received about 50 hours of CME. I am now starting to read books in Spanish to extend my vocabulary, and use the language in conversations more and more. I go on mission trips to Honduras almost every year, and try to speak only Spanish in my interviews with patients, unless I'm desperate, in which case I have a translator.
I solve the problem of not quite enough time after the initial statement in English by turning off the CD player until I have had time to translate it by myself first. I repeat a track until I get it down, then move on to the next track. At the end of the CD, I repeat the whole CD for review, before moving on to the next one.
There are some great bilingual books for working on your vocabulary and grammar, and the ability to comprehend what you read. I echo getting the Franklin translator. It's a very good way to quickly look up words with which you are not familiar, much faster than a dictionary. Also, it will have a lot of the verb forms which are not even listed in a dictionary, and will tell you what the infinitive is. After a while, it gets easier, and you have to use it only for new words. It's indispensable if you are serious. I would also recommend getting a fairly comprehensive dictionary for reference. Not everything is in the Franklin electronic dictionary.
My next step will be to start watching Spanish soap operas (there are many) on TV 2-3 times per week. The vocabulary seems to be fairly simple and common in these, and they tend to speak slowly and clearly (on some of them--you have to pick and choose one where you can understand the players). Talk shows are usually awful (limited experience admittedly), as are sports commentaries, speaking machine gun spanish. Maybe someday.
Overall I think this is a great course to start someone who is serious about learning the language, but doesn't have the time or opportunity to go to college, or an immersion course/experience. I highly recommend it. I have not tried other products because I bought this first and have not felt the need to try others.
- Good pace & good price Bought this after comparing reviews for this product and Rosetta Stone. It includes a bonus disc w/ all MP3 files so you can easily put them on your MP3 player without ripping all the discs. I was really happy with the pace. I didn't really use the included booklets except when I was confused about spelling and wanted to see a word in print. Overall, extremely please w/ quality, especially for such a low price for audio language learning.
- Good porduct This product works very well for me. I like the fact that I learn how to pronounce the words correctly by listening to the native speakers. No complaints so far!
- review some words are hard to understand. so with out someone els its hard to say if you are pronounsing it right.
